Dear Members
at Large,
Your
National Executive Board held its third meeting
in San Francisco in mid-September. Look in your
current Kiwi Kaleidoscope for information
and anecdotes regarding that meeting and get
together with the Golden Gate Chapter.
I am pleased
to report that we have 86 new members in The
Kiwi Club! We attribute that to our efforts in
recruiting retirees from American’s rolls and
our communication efforts. These recruitment
efforts have been extensive – from writing
letters and making personal contacts with the
retirees, placing our posters at crew bases
across the country, sending out copies of the
Kaleidoscope with our responses to all
inquiries, mailing brochures, and trying to get
local newspapers to report our events. So far,
we have had only limited success with newspaper
articles, but we did get two new members from an
article in the local PHX paper. We’re not giving
up!
The Florida
chapters are at work getting ready for
convention. The Florida Suncoast Chapter is the
overall Host Chapter, with the other chapters
each hosting an event or taking on a
responsibility. The other chapters involved are
the Southwest Florida, Gulf Coast, and Central
Florida Chapters.
A welcoming
optional cocktail party is scheduled for early
arrivals. They have named it the “Green Flash”
because, as many of you may know, it is an
evening ritual on the Gulf of Mexico beaches for
people to gather and watch carefully for the
green flash that sometimes appears when the sun
sets to the west over the Gulf. You can’t blink
or you might miss it.
The Opening
Luncheon has a “Pirates in Paradise” theme, and
you’re welcome to come “dressed” for the
occasion if you dare. The closing Banquet
invites you to a “Sunset Soiree” with an
elegance that you can imagine. Bring colorful
tropical chic attire for that dinner.
And,
of course, there are the Optional Events. This
convention is offering not one, not two, but
three Optional Events. The first, of course, is
the above-mentioned cocktail party, the second
is a sunset dinner cruise on a paddlewheel
riverboat, and the third is a tour of the famous
Dali Museum. Take your pick – or choose all
three.
As you can
see, the chapters are going all out to help us
celebrate our 60th anniversary as an
organization and our 30th convention. We hope
you will be among us.
I have a
plea to make: If you are near a chapter, please
visit one of their functions. Being part of a
chapter makes being a Kiwi more complete and you
get the full benefit of being a member – fun and
camaraderie. Also, if we have just 5 Kiwis in
your area, we can start a new chapter. I will
be happy to help you.
See you on
St. Pete Beach, Florida, May 5-7, 2012. You
won’t be able to miss me – I’ll be sitting on
that beautiful white-sand beach trying to spot
the green flash.
Warm
regards,
Jane
