1934-1937 First American Airlines Uniform 1937-1939: WINTER 1940-1946 WINTER 1942-1958 SUMMER 1946-1953 WINTER 1953-1964 WINTER 1960 -1963 SUMMER 1964-1966 SUMMER 1964-1966 1966-1967 SUMMER 1966-1967 WINTER The navy blue wool double breasted jacket has a matching long skirt with a zipper on the stewardess' left side and a pleat on each lower side in the back. The uniform is worn with a matching navy hat, light blue short sleeved man-tailored shirt, man's black wide tie, and black lace up shoes with military heel. The jacket is a dark blue serge with lapels, and (3) buttons on each sleeve. There is one button to close the front and a pocket on each lower side of the bodice with a pocket flap and a pocket on the left bodice without a flap. The jacket has an embroidered triangle at the bottom of each wing on the back. The matching skirt with side zipper has a box pleat in back, featuring the same triangle embroidering. Skirt length is several inches below the knee. The original dark red silk blouse had long sleeves, dark blue stud-type buttons, and a self-bow tie. The duplication in the Traveling Collection is short-sleeved in a polyester blend material. The dark navy matching hat is an overseas style cap. Shoes are black lace up style with military heel. The navy blue gabardine jacket, with (6) buttons, has (3) buttons on each sleeve and wing flaps on each side of the bodice. The matching navy blue skirt has gores and was worn at the knee. In this photo the white blouse is worn inside the jacket collar with a navy grosgrain ribbon tied in a bow at the neck of the collar. The hat was a plain matching navy overseas style cap. Shoes were a pump style with a semi-thick heel. This Palm Beach/British Tan summer uniform has a tightly fitted jacket without a collar and a single row of buttons in the front. There are breast flaps on either side of the bodice. The matching skirt has (8) gores and is slightly flared at the bottom. The blouse has short sleeves and an open-notched collar. The overseas cap has a white insert. The brown and white spectator-style pumps have a semi thick 2 1/2 inch heel. The navy blue jacket is without a collar and has (3) buttons in the front and long sleeves. The matching navy skirt with knife pleats is long, depicting the skirt length style in the late 1940's. The white short sleeved blouse a a split point collar. The matching navy overseas cap is plain and shoes are dark navy pumps with a higher and thinner heel than previous styles. This navy blue jacket has (4) buttons in the front and 3/4 length sleeves. The matching skirt is below the knee in length and has a single pleat in the back. The blouse has short sleeves and an open notched collar. The navy blue overseas style cap has a white insert. Shoes are dark navy high heeled pumps with a narrow heel. The powder blue jacket has 3/4 length sleeves and (4) buttons in the front. The matching skirt is just below the knee in length with a single pleat in the back. The white short sleeved blouse has an open notched collar. The powder blue overseas style cap has a white insert. Shoes are dark navy high heeled pumps with a narrow heel. The powder blue jacket has (3) buttons forming a triangle and the matching powder blue skirt is slightly flared at the bottom. The matching beret, or mushroom style hat, features white piping and the AA Logo Pin is worn in the front center of the hat. The white cotton single point blouse has short sleeves. Navy blue "spike" style high heeled pumps are worn with the uniform. Like the summer version, this navy blue uniform has (3) buttons forming a triangle. The matching navy skirt is slightly flared at the bottom, and the white single point collar blouse has short sleeves. The beret, or mushroom style hat, is navy with white piping and the AA Logo Pin is worn in the front center of the hat. Shoes are navy high heeled pumps with a narrow heel (spikes).
The Sea Island Blue uniform was worn in the summer. The stylish Pillbox hat features a gold American Airlines Insignia worn in the front center of the hat. The semi-fitted, double breasted jacket falls just below the waist and has eight buttons and 3/4 length sleeves. The skirt is just below the knee and has a wide panel in the front. The white blouse shown here has a triangle cut out at the neckline and is made of a crinkly fabric. There were slight changes in fabric for this summer uniform involving plastic buttons instead of the covered and a smoother fabric. A different blouse was also introduced with this uniform, which was a smooth cotton blend fabric without the triangle cut out and had short sleeves. The changes, it has been noted, had to do with wearability and comfort. All of these items are part of the collection, either in the Traveling or Archival Collections.

On flights between the Mainland and Hawaii only female flight attendants wore this long muumuu with a side slit. The background was navy with a red and white floral pattern. The muumuu is worn with either a red or navy obi sash. An optional matching floral jacket can be worn with the muumuu. Other optional items include a small floral piece for the hair, or a matching lei. Shoes can be navy or red pumps (high or low) to match the colors in the muumuu. This uniform came with many options for individuality. The first combination shown here is a dark navy blue jacket with a gray and navy diagonal stripe on each sleeve and one pewter color button with the AA Logo to close the front and two smaller buttons of the same style on each sleeve. The matching skirt had a single pleat in the back, which later changed to the option of (2) pleats. Shown here is the short sleeved gray tuxedo style blouse and the navy blue vest with the pewter color AA Logo buttons forming a "V" in the front. The optional navy blue Fedora style hat had the same gray and navy ribbon stripe and could be worn on International routes. The scarf is oblong with a gray, navy, white and red pattern and a solid navy border with red pin-striping and American Airlines printed in red. The thin navy leather belt has a navy medallion style buckle with the AA Eagle Logo and edges trimmed in gray. Shoes were a navy blue or black pump. Another option in this collection was the navy blue dress with a jewel style neckline. The slightly puffed short sleeves had the same gray and navy diagonal stripe as the jacket. The wide leather belt is navy with a rectangular shaped eagle buckle. The large square scarf has a gray, navy, white and red pattern with navy border and American Airlines printed in red. Shoes are navy or black pumps. A second dress in this collection is a navy blue coatdress style with (6) pewter color buttons with the AA Logo. The short sleeves have the same gray and navy diagonal stripe as the jacket. The wide belt is a matching navy fabric . Shoes are navy or black pumps. Shown here is the navy blue vest with pewter color buttons forming a "V", worn with matching navy blue pants with pleats. The gray short sleeved blouse is with hidden buttons.
